Stainless steel is one of the most used materials in piping for applications ranging from small, low cost and domestic applications to large, complex and high cost industrial and commercial applications. There are different requirements for different applications and the different grades of the stainless steel can provide the necessary standards. Sometimes, the prescribed material might not be found, costly or not necessarily mandatory.
In these cases, equivalent materials could be used. The operating temperature is one of the limiting factors that could demand a specification of steel. When another material with the similar mechanical properties is accessible, it could be used as an equivalent material. For example, the A53 grade B is a carbon steel alloy that is used in structural applications.
It could be replaced with A106 grade B pipes which are also seamless carbon steels. These are meant for low pressure low temperature materials. For high pressure and high temperature services, the 321 titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steels are used. When required, the 347 niobium stabilized steels could be used as replacement. With difference in composition, they both share high temperature properties which make them interchangeable.
