There are different standards such as the ASME B36.19 Stainless Steel Pipe. The B36.19 is for wrought stainless steel pipes ranging from 14 inches to 22 inches. There are other standardizations such as schedules which denote the diameter to wall thickness proportions. The Stainless Steel Schedule 40 Pipe is a medium thickness schedule.

The schedules are useful in calculating the pressure containment of each pipe types. The higher the schedule, the higher the pressure containment is. The ASME SA312 Stainless Steel Pipe is used in applications where strength is the foremost concern. The Stainless Steel Schedule 10 Pipe has relatively low pressure classes. We produce different grades as well. Our ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe is applicable for high temperature services. We also produce Ansi B36.19 Stainless Steel Pipe in all grades. Although the SS Round Pipe is the most commonly used, we also manufacture SS Oval Pipe for special purposes. Our SS Rectangular Pipe could be used in structural applications as well. What is stainless steel pipe allowable working pressure?

Stainless steel pipes are made up of different materials with different composition. All of the material grades have a yield and tensile strength values. The yield strength is what the material could withstand before changing shape permanently while the tensile strength is at which the pipe will rip apart when pulled from opposite directions.

Similar to the yield and tensile strength, there are working pressure and bursting pressures for pipes. The pipes have to operate under various temperatures and pressures. The maximum allowable working pressure indicates the pressure at which the pipe can operate without starting to change. The bursting pressure is at which pressure the pipe will begin to burst. There are different values of allowable working pressures for different materials, diameters, wall thicknesses and schedules. For example, the standard wrought steel pipes at schedule 40 would have 1080PSI of allowable working pressure for ¾ inches diameter.

With the increment of diameter, the allowable working pressure decreases. The 1 inch pipes have 1010PSI and the 1 ¼ inch pipes have 840PSI. The working pressure is calculated with Barlow’s formula. The yield strength of the pipe is multiplied by the design factor of the pipe to derive the allowable working pressure.
