Difference between 316 Seamless and welded pipe

The 316 is a stainless steel grade that has chromium and nickel in its composition; so does the 304 grade of ordinary stainless steel. In addition to this, the 316 has molybdenum which adds to the corrosion resistance.

There are two major ways of manufacturing pipes from this material. One is the seamless pipes which are produced through a process called the cold drawing. This means, the pipe is brought into shape by drawing the raw material into a pipe shape. Once drawn, there is no other work pending in terms of bringing the shape. There would be no seams because there were no welding works involved.

On the other hand, the welded pipes are made from welding a sheet in a longitudinal axis so that it is curved and welded as a pipe. Some pipes are welded through a spiral welding to increase the strength. The main difference is that the welded pipes have seams which cause undulating wall thickness where the seamless pipes have little to no undulations. The deviation in the wall thickness is called the absolute roughness and the seamless pipes have less absolute roughness than the welded pipes.
